The Responsibility of Wealth in Islam: Fulfilling the Rights of Others

Allah Almighty has bestowed upon us a complete code of life in the form of Islam, which provides guidance not only for individual reform but also for the welfare of society. The fundamental nature of Islam is based on brotherhood, love, and the fulfillment of others’ rights.

The status of wealth and property is also made clear in these teachings: it is an Amanah, whose proper use is an important responsibility of a Muslim. In today’s social landscape, there is a trend where people consider their wealth and possessions as a result of their personal hard work and abilities, and they become arrogant after this thinking. This concept breeds arrogance in their hearts. As a result, they start ignoring the needy individuals around them. Such people forget that even in the initial teachings of the Holy Quran, we are taught: “Spend from what We have provided for you” (Al-Baqarah:3).

This is the philosophy of Islam that we should understand the truth that wealth and property are gifts from Allah Almighty, and human effort plays a secondary role. When a person ingrains this reality in their heart—that whatever they have is merely by the grace and benevolence of Allah—a desire arises to fulfill the rights of others. Instead of limiting their wealth to their own needs, they think of spending it in the service of Allah’s creatures.

There is a significant lack of this thinking in our society. Often, when people become wealthy, they turn their wealth into a means of power and adopt the path of oppression and exploitation over others. They take advantage of the vulnerabilities of employees and weaker individuals, turning weaknesses of employees into their own strength.

This attitude is not only against Islamic teachings but also denies the fundamental principles of humanity.

Remember My Friends! Helping the needy and weak is the responsibility of the wealthy, which will be a source of reward for them in the hereafter. They should not give considering it a favor, although those who receive should consider it a favor.

My Friends! The purpose of a Muslim should be to fulfill the rights of others, understand their problems, strive to alleviate their difficulties, and gladly fulfill the rights of subordinates and employees.

Wealth and property are a test. Acquiring them is an arduous task, but the real stage of this test begins when a person earns wealth and then enters the field of spending it. The person who is just in spending state is blessed by Allah Almighty with prosperity and is granted even more. Just as they create ease in people’s lives, their own life becomes filled with ease.

Let us all pray that Allah Almighty grants us the ability to understand our responsibilities and act upon them. May Allah enrich all of us with abundant and blessed sustenance, and then grant us the ability to spend this provision in the right ways. Amen.
