Five Essential Principles for Quran Teachers In the Light of Islamic Teachings

Imam al-Faqih (امام الفقیہ رحمہ اللہ تعالیٰ ) states that if a teacher intends to earn reward and wishes that their work aligns with the work of the prophets (peace be upon them), they must observe five essential principles:

1. Do not insist on payment or compensation. Accept gifts if given, but don’t pursue those who do not offer any. However, if one sets a condition for payment for teaching spelling, writing, or memorization, it is permissible.
2. Always remain in a state of ablution (Wudu), as teaching often requires frequent handling of the Holy Quran.
3. Teach with genuine empathy and care, maintaining a considerate approach towards students.
4. Maintain equality among all students. Do not show favoritism to wealthier students while ignoring those from modest backgrounds.
5. Avoid excessive and severe punishment, for accountability will be held on the Day of Judgment.

Khubaib bin Abi Thabit narrates that teachers inherit the fortune of kings, and their accountability will also be akin to that of kings.
